BLUEBACK showcases the extraordinary beauty of the world’s oceans and wildlife in an empowering coming of age story. The family-friendly film centres on Abby, a child who while diving befriends a blue grouper she names Blueback. When Abby realises that the fish is under threat, she takes inspiration from her activist Mum, Dora, and takes on poachers to save her friend. There starts her life-long journey to save the world’s coral reefs.
Blueback will introduce audiences to the wonders of our oceans like the classics Free Willy, Whale Rider and Luc Besson’s The Big Blue before it. It is a film about friendship, family, ecological activism and a celebration of the natural world, for a new generation.
To bring our hero Blueback to life, the filmmakers will use a combination of state-of-the-art animatronic puppetry created by Creature Technology Company (King Kong: Alive on Broadway and arena show How To Train Your Dragon) with further CG by Soundfirm (Peter Rabbit, Paper Planes). This will enable them to achieve a photorealism that matches the documentary elements to be captured by their specialised team of underwater camera operators who have worked on major features and documentary series, including Blue Planet.
Blueback was shot on location in Bremer Bay and Ningaloo Reef Australia.
